General Sir Henry Robert Ferguson Davie, 1st Baronet (1797-1885), known as Henry Ferguson until 1846, was Liberal Member of Parliament for Haddington in East Lothian, Scotland, 1847-1878 and an army officer. He was appointed Colonel of the 73rd (Perthshire) Regiment of foot in 1865. The Regiment became the second Battalion, The Black Watch in 1881, and the General served as Colonel of the Battalion until his death.£800-1200

394. Three beautifully illustrated diaries dated 1871, 1881 and 1896 and one sketch book by George Henry Cooper (born 1846) resident of Wincanton, Somerset; the diaries give a vivid daily account of his life as a country gentleman and solicitor.
Mr Cooper was an active cricketer (he was a founder member and first President of Wincanton Cricket Club) and the diaries list monies spent on 'Cricket goods' and 'White paint'. Also keen on country sports and he describes horse racing (George Cooper was also involved in the early Wincanton Races) hunting and shooting, listing the number and type of game bagged, his shooting companions and the weather conditions. A regular cyclist, he chronicles and times his cycle rides to the surrounding towns eg. 20th April 1896 "Cycle ride to Sherborne - Left Wincanton 4.5, Templecombe 4.35, Henstridge Ash 4.50, Milborne Port 5.15, Sherborne 5.30". He quite often mentions the time that he dined and what he ate.
The entries are accompanied by detailed watercolour drawings of the events described, his friends, family and interiors. At the front of the 1881 diary, written in pencil and underlined in colours, "N.B. This diary was at Marlborough House in 1882 for the young Princess of Wales amusement, GHC."
The sketchbook is bound in a tooled and embossed maroon hard cover, it is dedicated at the front by 'Edward Yalden Cooper 1863' (George Cooper's father, also a solicitor in South Street, Wincanton), the stuck in sketches show a family holiday in Kirkudbright as well as scenes of his family life and events.
